JUNE SALES

SHRUB AND PERENNIAL OF THE WEEK #3 (June 16 - June 22)

Hostas, aka Plantain Lilies

Hostas, aka Plantain Lilies

Hostas, aka Plantain Lilies

Hostas are popular, easy-care, shade-loving perennials native to northeast Asia but widely cultivated in North America, particularly in the Northeast. They are known for their attractive foliage and are well-suited to the region's climate. Hostas thrive in shaded areas, making them a great choice for landscapes in the Northeast where sunlight can be limited.

  • Prefer well-drained soil enriched with organic matter is ideal.
  • Hostas generally prefer partial to full shade, with some sun-tolerant varieties available.
  • Regular watering is important, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering.
  • Deer, slugs, and snails can be potential pests.
  • Hostas can be easily divided to propagate and maintain their vigor.

Hydrangea

Hostas, aka Plantain Lilies

Hostas, aka Plantain Lilies

Hydrangeas are popular flowering shrubs in the Northeastern US, with several species thriving in the region. Smooth hydrangea (H. arborescens) is native to the area and known for its white, globe-shaped flowers. Panicle hydrangeas (H. paniculata) are also common, with large, cone-shaped flower heads, often turning pink or cranberry in late summer. Bigleaf hydrangeas (H. macrophylla) are popular for their large, showy blooms, though they can be less reliable in colder areas due to potential dieback.

  • Most hydrangeas prefer well-drained soil and a location with morning sun and afternoon shade.
  • Smooth and panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood, making them more reliable bloomers in colder climates.
  • Bigleaf hydrangeas can be sensitive to winter damage in colder zones and may need protection.
  • Oakleaf hydrangeas need full sun to part shade and benefit from mulch to retain moisture.
